(course text excerpt) To start to understand these qualities here is a partial list of associations that you can use to start to form your own. While this logic may seem simple or common sense, it can get quite complex as the qualities overlap. Remember that we are only separating the qualities here for ease of learning. In reality each object has numerous different qualities. It is those that are more predominate that help us define that object as well as how we understand the differences between the doshas and their manifestations. To help simplify this, there are three pairs of opposites used in Ayurvedic therapies that are immensely useful, though not emphasized enough in many courses and texts on this subject. They are heavy/light, wet/dry and hot/cold which correspond to lightening/nourishing, drying/oiling, and fomentation/astringent therapies. This is one of the main paradigms used to
