Too often people look at health care from a decidedly western lens. Instead of taking a pill, people just want an herb instead. At least they are going for a natural alternative! Ayurveda would never recommend an herb without knowing the client and it is important to be weary of claims from people trying to sell products. Herbs function differently than regular pill based medicine whose effects are often pin pointed for certain issues, though have different effects per a person’s constitution that western medicos don’t recognize. Herbs in general have far more reaching actions and can work very differently on different people depending on what their mixed with as well. They have their own intelligence that is not as easy as breaking down the chemical constituents, though many try. I would only recommend to use herbs as a last line of defense or in special circumstances for when you are out of balance. Since most of us are out of balance, naturally you might be interested in the subject. However, there are so many factors that go into properly assessing which herb for whom at what time for how long and what reason that throwing out basic claims for herbs and their properties will do little good for someone in the long run. Also, unless you have other considerations under control such as diet, lifestyle, and relationships, herbs will serve little more than a prop for your other issues and is not recommended.
